Under the
Same Moon

A handmade lantern, a table of shared food, and time to sit and talk. This Mid-Autumn gathering gave neighbours a chance to get to know one another through making, playing, and sharing.

Mid-Autumn 2026

A festival that brought neighbours together

Initiated by Vancouver Shengmi members, this member-led community project welcomed neighbours of different ages and backgrounds. Lantern making, cultural activities, food, and conversation offered simple ways to meet someone new.

Children, teenagers, and adults made lanterns together. Some attendees wore traditional Chinese-inspired clothing, sparking conversations about Mid-Autumn traditions. Bilingual instructions and volunteer support made the guessing game easier to join, while shared dishes gave everyone a reason to sit together and keep talking.

What we took away

Small shared moments build connection

Making a lantern, solving a guessing game, helping a child, or passing a dish to a neighbour gave people who might not otherwise have met a chance to connect. Through hands-on activities, cultural traditions became something to share and talk about together.

Thank you to the friends, family members, and volunteers who prepared materials, decorated the room, and helped throughout the event—and to every neighbour who came with curiosity.
